You don’t need a big capital to start a business, all you need is a good strategy!

In this First batch, we have chosen 4 business ideas you can start in Kigali for less than $100 (which is around RWF102,000 at the time we are writing this blog). The reason why we chose Kigali is simply because these types of businesses can do better in this town due to its high concentration of people – close to 2million people. Furthermore, Kigali has the highest number of Internet users, which is the backbone of these businesses.

These business ideas have the same features:

  • You don’t need any office/shop to start
  • You can start making profit in the 1st month
  • You may need a registered business (which is free through RDB)
  • Customers need to TRUST you in order to make the 1st purchase with you
  • You need a smartphone and Internet on daily basis
  • You don’t need any special skill nor experience to start
  • You will need to advertise on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
  • You need a bank account, bank card (Visa or MasterCard to run paid social media ads) – here you need to confirm with your bank whether they approve online transactions since not all banks do.

Here are the business ideas:

Online Vending and Delivery Service for Fruits, Vegetables and Cereals

Fruits and Vegetables

What problem are you solving? People have become very busy: they hardly get time to go to the market to buy good fruits and vegetables due to busy schedules. Some people suggest that they wouldn’t mind if they gotten someone who can be delivering fruits, vegetables and cereals for them at a particular cost.

How to make money: For a start, you can target let’s say 200 families/customers and charge them a membership fee of maybe FRW2,000 monthly as service fee (does not include shopping fees) whereby they can be ordering any foodstuff available in the market and you can be delivering to their homes/offices using hired vehicle or motorbike. You will be selling convenience, not food!

How to get customers: Do paid campaigns on Facebook Page and Instagram worth $2 per day with nice images of fruits and vegetables while promising quality products and timely delivery. That would be around $60 monthly. The remaining $40 can be used for internet and airtime to call customers.

Possible income: FRW2,000 x 200 customers x 12 months = FRW4,800,000 annually.

Online Selling of Accessories of Mobile Phones and Computer

Quality accessories for mobile phones

What problem are you solving? Almost everyone in Kigali has a mobile phone to communicate and there are times when it gets damaged, the battery weakens, charger gets lost, or someone needs to upgrade the memory size without changing the handset and so on. All these are opportunities to avail to them screen protectors, batteries, earphones, chargers, memory cards and so on. Keep in mind that not everyone knows how much these products cost. You can complement this with selling computer accessories such as adapters, laptop batteries, keyboard replacements, headphones…

How to make money: In case you are wondering where to get these accessories if you have no shop, do a small research by visiting shops that sell the same items and bargain a commission for every product you sell. When a customer orders, you will have to take it to them physically (or send someone? Motorbike?) and charge delivery fees. You can as well add your own markup.

How to get customers: Do paid campaigns on Facebook Page and Instagram worth $2 per day with nice images with descriptions of prices for earphones, chargers. That would be around $60 monthly. The remaining $40 can be used for internet and airtime to call customers. Keep in mind that you don’t need to have any shop at all!

Possible income: FRW20,000 x 20 days in a month x 12 months = FRW4,800,000/year

Social Media Management and Marketing for Businesses, Brands and Celebrities

Social Media Management is growing very fast

What problem are you solving? Every company, public figure and brand is struggling to keeping up with their social media presence and that’s where you come in. Just remove this luggage from their shoulders and get paid.

Social media is not just posting pictures so that there is some activity of the profile, rather, it’s a branding strategy and a growth model which actually means you need to know what you are doing before you get started. (You can search on YouTube how to manage social media accounts for brands, public figures and so on.) It will take you less than 7 days to fully understand everything!

How to make money: You will be charging to help manage social media accounts for your customers and help them to run paid ads and so on. The interesting part would be for example helping music artists (why not slay queens? 😀) to grow from 1 instagram follower to 100,000 followers. How to do this? Search Youtube.

How to get customers: Do paid campaigns on Facebook Page and Instagram worth $2 per day with nice images with descriptions of services you will be offering. That would be around $60 monthly. The remaining $40 can be used for internet and airtime to call customers.

Possible income: FRW30,000 x 20 customers x 12 months = FRW3,600,000/year

Writing Business Plans and Proposals as a service

What problem are you solving? Writing business plans and proposals is complicated when you haven’t studied this/or gotten extensive training in accounting, finance, or other business-related courses. The most hectic part is that GOOD business plan consultants are VERY expensive. This is where you come in! You see, in this era, everything has gone digital and easy! There are FREE and PAID online and Offline software tools that can help you do good business plans with ZERO financial knowledge! For example, bizplan.com which has the most powerful system in the world in developing business plans, charges just $29/month and you can write as many business plans as you wish! Where you need to do deep market research, use the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) website – statistics.gov.rw, they have all data you need to do a good and profound study. This will help you in analyzing for example how many people can afford to buy a bread for customers who want to setup a bakery and so on. If you analyze NISR data well then you have all you need to get started.

How to make money: Charge customers as per the project complexity. Why not percentage of the total capital? Or a fixed fee? It’s all up to you.

How to get customers: Do paid campaigns on Facebook Page and Instagram worth $2 per day with descriptions of services you will be offering. That would be around $60 monthly. The remaining $40 can be used for internet and airtime to call customers or even paying for an online software that makes the work easier for you!

Possible income: average of FRW100,000 x 5 projects in 1 month x 12 = FRW6,000,000/year

Conclusion:

Don’t sit down and say these businesses are unrealistic, just get started and see what happens! Who knows?

Perhaps you don’t have $100? Ask someone to give you, it may be a friend or relative.
